We had a really busy lesson and covered a lot of information in our lesson. Sociolinguistic Concepts: At the beginning of our lesson, we went through different sociolinguistic concepts. We'll be using these terms throughout our course, so make sure you are familiar with them. We paid special attention to the use of L1 (first language) and L2 (second language), as well as linguistic prejudice. Linguistic Concepts: For the remaining part of our lesson, we look at these concepts: a. phonology / phonetics b. vocabulary c. cultural conventions / schema We didn't have time to cover morphology, but we'll take a look at it in next week's lesson. Changes in English: Before the end of our lesson, we saw four videos that showed the stages of English: a. Old English b. Middle English c. Early Modern English d. Modern English Your lecture preparation will investigate the origins and changes in English in more detail. Today's course provide you the foundation for the rest of our course. We'll be using these concepts when we talk about different varieties of English. Next week, we start with British English. Homework: 1. Lecture preparation #2
